How many times have you heard the saying 'prevention is better than cure' these are wise words and for any Fire Safety Officer it sums up our working ethos. Fire Prevention Departments were established to police the fire safety legislation that was being introduced by local fire authorities, and over the years we can proudly say that in many different areas we have been successful, for example the number of people injured or killed in the workplace by fire has been drastically reduced. However when we look at the statistics one area which is still a cause for concern is the domestic environment, or put in simple terms if you are going to die in a fire the chances are you will be at home and asleep in bed! This alarming fact has prompted Brigades throughout the country to introduce a separate department within fire prevention, and the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service is no exception, and so community fire safety was born. In 1998 the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service Community Fire Safety Officers were put in place. The posts are currently held by Station Officer Carl Kinvig and Leading Firefighter Danny Dooley. So what is the purpose of Community Fire Safety? in essence we are there to help you make your home environment as safe as possible in regard to fire, and hopefully increase fire safety awareness across the community. To make your home safer is in fact extremely easy and by taking a few simple steps you can increase your chances of survival dramatically. So over the coming months we will look at different ways of putting these measures in place, and together hopefully, the decrease in fire deaths in the working environment will be mirrored in the home.
