The Island is a fascinating mix of operational challenges from historic landmarks such as Laxey Wheel (Lady Isabella) to the most advanced technological industries; it includes large rural and agricultural areas with light industry and urban populations. As the Island is both a finance centre and a tourist destination, it is heavily dependent upon sea and air links. Together these combine to present the potential for a wide range of incidents that the Service could be called to attend, from single car road traffic collisions to large multi-agency emergencies. The vision of the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service as a whole is to make the Island a safer place to live, work and visit. The Operations Department contributes to this by ensuring that when the Service is called upon to attend incidents that it is ready and able to do so. Whilst responding to “emergencies” is one of the primary roles of the Service it would not be able to do this as effectively if the Operations Department did not also perform a number of other less visible supporting roles. As would be expected these supporting roles are many and varied and include - Training, Information Gathering, Health and Safety, Procurement, Information and Communications Technology and the Maintenance of Vehicles, Equipment and Buildings. These various strands, when brought together, result in trained, professional and informed personnel responding efficiently to incidents using modern appliances and equipment, for the benefit of the Islands community at their time of greatest need. |
