3 Legs of Mann.
ISLE OF MAN FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE
HILL SEARCH TEAM

N-S-E-W ?

Another specialist rescue team that the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service operates is the Hill Search and Rescue Team.  The Hill Search Team team consists of one overall Officer in Charge, three Search Managers who have been trained to a university degree level and eighteen highly trained Firefighters.

The Hill Search Team is usually mobilised after a specific request by the Isle of Man Police to incidents such as accidents involving aircraft or missing person situations.

When an incident has been declared the pagers of all off duty Hill Search Personnel are operated and the team is mobilised to a rendezvous point where one of the Hill Search Managers will brief the team before they are deployed on a specific task.

All members of the Hill Search Team undergo regular field and classroom training sessions where map reading, navigational and communication skills are put to the test, the team also undertake night time training exercises.

All team members are equipped with high quality Gore-Tex clothing and personal protective equipment and are constantly in radio contact with the Incident Control Vehicle call sign Hotel 1.

The next section that we are currently working on will cover pictures and information on the communication and navigational equipment that the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service Hill Search Team currently use.

The primary role of  search and rescue helicopters is to provide assistance to RAF aircrew in trouble, however, the majority of the time their call-outs will be to civilian incidents.

At RAF Valley a SAR Helicopter under the direction of "22Squadron" is ready to go 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  During daylight hours the crew are on a 15 minute readiness and a 1 hour readiness at night.

This Sea King is powered by two Rolls Royce turboshaft engines and can accommodate a crew of four with up to 19 passengers.  It is fitted with all-weather search and rescue equipment and positioning computers.  The winch operator can fly the aircraft when hovering, enabling him/her to position the rescue harness with great accuracy.
